Read a PPR size wrong and it gets expensive fast — a fitting that won’t fuse, a hot line specced at the wrong pressure class, an on-site swap that stalls the job. PPR is a metric product. It is sized by outside diameter (OD) in mm, and the wall thickness is set by the pressure class. The inch figure is only a nominal reference — always match by the actual mm OD, never by the inch label. The tables below use the IFANNova PN20 range (series 1103); the range is three diameters and stops at 32 mm.

Wall thickness for 20, 25 and 32 mm is confirmed IFANNova PN20 spec (series 1103). These three diameters are the full PPR range — 32 mm is where it stops, not a gap in the data.

PPR pipe is sized by outside diameter in mm, with wall thickness set by pressure class. On the IFANNova PN20 range (series 1103), the sizes are 20×2.8, 25×3.5 and 32×4.4 mm (OD × wall). The inch figure (½”, ¾”, 1″) is a nominal reference — match by the actual mm OD.

PN Ratings Explained — Why PN20 Is the Hot & Cold Water Standard

Unlike metal or PVC pipe, PPR isn’t specified by a schedule number — the market designates it by PN (Pressure Nominal) class, while ISO 15874-2 itself dimensions PP-R by S series. PN is the nominal pressure the pipe is rated to hold at a reference temperature. The key relationship:

  • Higher PN = thicker wall for the same outside diameter. That’s why a PN20 20 mm pipe has a 2.8 mm wall — the extra material carries both pressure and sustained heat.
  • For hot & cold pressurised water, underfloor heating and radiators → use PN20. Its wall handles the combination of internal pressure and hot-line temperature that would fatigue a thinner-walled, lower-PN pipe over time.
  • The costly mistake: speccing a lower PN on a hot line to save a few grams of resin. It reads fine on paper and fails years later under thermal cycling — exactly the kind of latent defect a consultant signs off against and a contractor gets held responsible for.

Matching Fittings to Pipe Size — and the mm ↔ Inch Reference

A PPR system only works when the fitting size matches the pipe OD exactly — heat fusion welds the fitting socket onto the pipe end, so a mismatch simply won’t fuse. Each pipe size has its matched fittings (series 1138): elbows, tees, couplings, and male/female threaded adapters that transition to metal fixtures.

On mm ↔ inch: because PPR is metric, the inch value is nominal. Rough guide: 20 mm ≈ ½”, 25 mm ≈ ¾”, 32 mm ≈ 1″. When ordering or cross-checking imported stock, always confirm by the mm OD, not the inch label — that’s how you avoid receiving the wrong-diameter batch.

Heat-Fusion Install Tips — Where the Right Size Pays Off

PPR is joined by heat fusion (socket welding), not glue or threads. A welding tool heats the pipe end and the fitting socket to melting point; they’re pushed together and cooled into one homogeneous, leak-free joint — as strong as the pipe itself. That’s exactly what a drinking-water or heating line needs. Key points where sizing precision decides success:

  • Match OD to fitting socket exactly — a size mismatch (e.g. imported pipe with an out-of-tolerance OD) won’t seat and won’t fuse cleanly.
  • Respect heating and cooling times by diameter — larger OD needs longer heat and cool. Rushing a 32 mm joint is a classic leak source.
  • Don’t rotate after joining — push straight, hold, let it cool undisturbed.
  • Consistent wall thickness matters — thin or uneven walls (a hallmark of under-spec pipe) fuse unpredictably. Confirmed PN20 wall figures (20×2.8, 25×3.5, 32×4.4) give a repeatable, reliable weld every time.
