Grooved Couplings on Plastic Pipe: Where They Are Listed, Where They Are a Field Improvisation

Grooved couplings on plastic pipe: which PVC, CPVC and HDPE joints have published ratings, which are FM listed, and when grooving is improvisation.

A pump skid arrives with grooved steel ends, the line it must meet is plastic, and someone on site reaches for a grooved coupling. Whether that joint is rated depends on the pipe. Victaulic’s PVC data applies only to PVC pipe conforming to ASTM D1785, Schedule 40 and 80, from 2 in (60.3 mm) to 16 in (406.4 mm). For polyethylene, the grooved HDPE coupling starts at 400 mm (16 in); from 63 to 355 mm the same maker’s PE coupling is plain-end, not grooved, and is rated to the pipe.

Listing is narrower again. FM Approvals Class 1920 covers grooved end couplings for use with steel pipe in aboveground sprinkler systems. Metric PVC-U, PP-R and grooved CPVC sprinkler pipe sit outside every published system we read below. On those pipes we found no rated grooved joint, so a grooved coupling there is a field improvisation.

Key takeaways

  • A 4 in Schedule 40 PVC joint is rated 220 psi (1,500 kPa) and Schedule 80 is rated 320 psi (2,200 kPa), for water at 23 °C.
  • Victaulic’s grooved HDPE coupling (Style 908) starts at 400 mm (16 in); below that its PE couplings are plain-end.
  • FM Approvals Class 1920 covers grooved end couplings for use with steel pipe in aboveground sprinkler systems.
  • In listed CPVC sprinkler systems, Viking’s CPVC catalogue says “Do not thread or groove CPVC pipe.”
  • A 110 mm pipe is 4.3 mm smaller than 4 in pipe, so an inch coupling is the wrong part.

Kevin Jones explains grooved pipe and couplings; this page asks whether that coupling is rated for plastic.

Which plastic pipes have a published grooved joint

“Published” means the coupling maker’s submittal names the pipe standard, sizes, end preparation and joint pressure. We read Victaulic’s plastic-pipe publications: every plastic gets its own table, and none inherits the steel rating.

Grooved steel, plain plastic: the coupling needs the maker’s table for that exact plastic pipe, not the steel rating. (Illustration.)

For PVC, a 4 in Schedule 40 PVC joint is rated 220 psi (1,500 kPa) and Schedule 80 is rated 320 psi (2,200 kPa), for water at 23 °C. For CPVC, the maker launched in 2017 a separate PGS-300 groove profile for Schedule 40 and 80 CPVC and PVC, 2 to 12 in, and its couplings are only for pipe cut to that profile.

Polyethylene is the reverse, with grooves only at large diameters: on 400-630 mm PE100 an SDR 11 joint is rated 16 bar, the pipe’s own rating, while SDR 7.4 pipe is capped at 20 bar unless pipe-end stiffeners are fitted. Smaller PE pipe is joined plain-end.

For contractors tying 20 to 110 mm HDPE into metal valves, pumps and meters without a groove, our HDPE compression fittings list the threaded transition sizes. We do not make grooved couplings.

Listed is narrower than published: fire protection

A listing is a certifier’s claim, and certifier scope text is written around steel. FM Approvals Class 1920 covers grooved end couplings for use with steel pipe in aboveground sprinkler systems (Class 1920, May 2026 edition). The international counterpart, ISO 6182-12:2019, covers grooved-end components for steel pipe systems up to DN 300.

For polyethylene, fire service means underground mains. Victaulic’s certification reference guide (Rev O, July 2022) lists FM ratings of 200 psi (1,725 kPa) for its plain-end HDPE couplings from 63 to 315 mm, with no UL (cULus) entry. The guide does not say which FM class those ratings sit under. The pipe needs its own approval: FM Approvals Class 1613 covers PE pipe and fittings for underground fire mains from NPS 4 to 36 in, other sizes case by case, so 63-90 mm (2-3 in) entries need a directory check. Check both entries on the certifier’s current directory for your project, because the maker’s guide says approved pressures may vary by pipe type.

Listed CPVC sprinkler systems do use grooves, but not on the pipe. The groove sits on a solvent-welded grooved coupling adapter, and Viking’s BlazeMaster CPVC catalogue (Rev 02, January 2023) says “Do not thread or groove CPVC pipe” and “Do not connect rigid metal couplers to CPVC grooved adapters”. Those fittings are UL listed to UL 1821 and FM Approved to Class 1635 at 175 psi (1,200 kPa) at 65 °C.

Why 110 mm is not 4 inch

Inch grooved couplings are sized to inch outside diameters: 2 in = 60.3 mm, 3 in = 88.9 mm, 4 in = 114.3 mm. Metric plastic pressure pipe misses each of them by more than the groove tolerance. For PVC, the groove diameter for 4 in PVC is 110.1 mm; the OD tolerance is ±0.15 mm at 2 in and ±0.20 mm at 3 and 4 in. A 110 mm pipe’s OD is already the 4 in groove-root diameter.

Metric OD (mm) Nearest inch size Inch OD (mm) Difference (mm) Verdict
63 2 in 60.3 +2.7 18 times the ±0.15 mm tolerance
90 3 in 88.9 +1.1 More than five times the ±0.20 mm tolerance
110 4 in 114.3 −4.3 Pipe OD sits at the 4 in groove bottom

Source: inch ODs and groove dimensions from Victaulic 32.01 (2017) and 25.11; metric ODs from the IFANNova product range; differences are our arithmetic, 29 September 2026.

Metric PE is the exception: the PE couplings come in ISO sizes, 63 to 110 mm among them. Metric PVC-U has no such table in the documents we read.

Field improvisations to avoid

Items 1-4 and 6 come from a maker’s own document (item 2 is a “not recommended”, item 4 a rating condition); item 5 is our reading of the size tables.

  1. Steel roll sets on plastic. PVC roll grooving needs the maker’s plastic-pipe roll sets; weathered or damaged pipe should not be grooved.
  2. A rigid angle-pad coupling on PVC. The same document says rigid couplings with angle bolt pads are not recommended on grooved PVC.
  3. Taking the steel rating. The PVC data supersedes the coupling’s steel-pipe data.
  4. Ignoring temperature. For PVC joints above 23 °C, multiply by 0.75 at 32 °C, 0.62 at 37 °C and 0.40 at 49 °C. For 4 in Schedule 40 in a hot plant room, the 220 psi joint drops to 165 psi at 32 °C and 88 psi at 49 °C (our arithmetic).
  5. Grooving small HDPE. The publications we read offer a grooved HDPE coupling only from 400 mm (16 in); a groove cut into 110 mm PE matches none of them.
  6. Grooving CPVC sprinkler pipe, or clamping a rigid metal coupler on its adapter. Both are prohibited in Viking’s CPVC sprinkler catalogue.

How IFANNova pipe fits a grooved connection: what to use and what to ask

IFANNova is a French-designed, European-standard piping brand. Our pressure pipe stops at 110 mm.

HDPE, 63 to 110 mm. Our HDPE pipe runs 20 to 110 mm OD (110 mm with a 10.0 mm wall), so 63, 75, 90 and 110 mm fall inside the plain-end coupling range. That includes the transition coupling that takes 63-355 mm plain-end PE to grooved steel from DN50 to DN350. OD divided by wall gives 11.0 at 110 mm, inside the SDR 7 to 26 those couplings accept. The coupling data sheet names pipe to ASTM D3035 and F714 or ISO 4427-2, and the joint is rated to the pipe. Get the pipe standard and pressure class in writing from any pipe supplier, us included; this page states neither for our HDPE.

HDPE below 63 mm, and PP-R. Our PP-R in 20, 25 and 32 mm OD sits below every published size above. Join it by socket fusion (see socket versus butt fusion) and make the metal connection on one of the brass-insert transitions in our PP-R fittings range. Small HDPE uses our 603 and 604 compression fittings from 20 to 110 mm, including threaded transitions to metal valves, pumps and meters.

Below grooved PE coupling sizes, the metal joint is a thread: the compression fitting grips plain HDPE, so no groove is cut. (Illustration, not a product photo.)

UPVC 806. Our UPVC 806 pipe runs 20 to 110 mm OD, and the 110 mm size has a 7.2 mm wall. It is metric, so the ASTM D1785 tables do not apply; bring it to the grooved valve through a threaded 1806 male adapter or union (UPVC/CPVC 806 fittings) and let the steel side carry the groove.

Lead time. We hold no lead-time figure for couplings, which we do not make. What decides it: plastic-specific couplings (plain-end PE, PGS-300) are separate items from steel grooved couplings, so ask the coupling distributor whether that exact style and size is stocked. Ask us for the pipe’s plant-departure date on the same size list.

Conclusion

Before a grooved coupling goes on plastic pipe:

  1. Name the pipe standard and size, and find the coupling maker’s table for that exact pipe.
  2. For fire service, confirm the coupling and the pipe on the certifier’s directory, separately.
  3. Rate the joint from the plastic table and apply the temperature factor.
  4. If no table covers the pipe, specify a threaded, flanged or compression transition instead.

Written by the IFANNova Technical Team (Engineering & Export), from coupling makers’ published submittals, FM Approvals Classes 1613 and 1920, and ISO 6182-12:2019.

Reviewed 29 September 2026. IFANNova does not make grooved couplings; every coupling figure here is third-party data, and no lead-time figure is stated because none is held.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a grooved coupling?

A bolted housing with a gasket that locks into a groove near each pipe end. The gasket seals and the housing keys into the grooves to hold the joint. On plastic pipe it is rated only where the coupling maker publishes data for that pipe.

Can you use grooved couplings on HDPE pipe?

Only at large sizes in the maker’s data we read: Victaulic’s grooved HDPE coupling starts at 400 mm (16 in). From 63 to 355 mm the same maker’s PE coupling is plain-end, not grooved, and is rated to the pipe.

Can PVC pipe be grooved?

Yes, where the data covers it: one coupling maker’s PVC data applies only to PVC pipe conforming to ASTM D1785, Schedule 40 and 80, from 2 in (60.3 mm) to 16 in (406.4 mm). Weathered or damaged pipe should not be grooved.

Are grooved couplings UL listed for plastic pipe?

Victaulic’s certification guide leaves the cULus (UL) column empty for its plain-end HDPE couplings, and we found no UL listing for grooved plastic pipe in the documents we read. FM Approvals Class 1920 covers grooved end couplings for use with steel pipe in aboveground sprinkler systems. Listed CPVC sprinkler systems put the groove on a solvent-welded adapter, never on the pipe.
